Self-Taught Artists & Digital Creators

See All CoursesDrawing Foundations Courses
Our drawing foundations curriculum takes you from basic shapes to confident observational drawing — covering proportion, line control, shading, value, perspective, and composition in a structured, progressive sequence.
Line & Contour Drawing
Build confidence with pencil, charcoal, and ink. Develop clean, intentional linework through contour exercises rooted in close observation of real objects.
Proportion & Shapes
Learn to see and construct form through basic geometric relationships. Understand how proportion governs every convincing drawing — from still life to figure.
Shading & Value
Understand light and shadow through value scales and rendering techniques — hatching, blending, and tonal gradation — to give drawings dimension and depth.
Perspective & Space
Master one-point, two-point, and atmospheric perspective to place objects convincingly in space — essential for illustrators, designers, and architectural sketchers.
Observational Drawing
Develop the habit of drawing from life — still life, environment, and portraiture — the single most effective practice for consistent improvement at any level.
Composition Principles
Learn how artists organise visual information — rule of thirds, visual weight, balance, and negative space — to create drawings that hold attention and communicate clearly.
Life Drawing & Figure Drawing Classes
Drawing the human figure from a live model remains the single most powerful practice for improving anatomy, gesture, proportion, and spatial reasoning. Our weekly figure drawing sessions welcome all levels — from absolute beginners to professional illustrators who want to maintain sharp observational skills.
Each session combines timed gesture poses, longer sustained study, and instructor critique — building the instincts that power confident character drawing for illustration, animation, comics, and fine art.
Portfolio Development for College & Career
A strong portfolio is your most important asset when applying to art school, illustration programmes, or fine art degrees. We help you build one that communicates skill, originality, and creative thinking.
Concept Development
Learn to develop visual ideas from initial sketches through to finished pieces — building the conceptual depth that selectors at top art colleges look for.
Mixed Traditional & Digital
Build a portfolio that combines hand-drawn studies, ink illustrations, and digital pieces — demonstrating range and technical versatility across media.
Professional Presentation
Work with your instructor to select, sequence, and present your pieces with a professional standard — whether submitting physically or via an online portfolio.
Who This Programme Is For
Our portfolio development programme serves teenagers preparing Leaving Certificate art portfolios, school leavers applying to NCAD, TU Dublin, or international art schools, and career changers pursuing graduate programmes in illustration or fine art. Beginners are fully welcome — we build the work from scratch alongside you.
Sessions include one-to-one critique, guided briefs, and portfolio review checkpoints across the course duration. Previous students have secured places at NCAD Dublin, Griffith College, and illustration courses in London and Amsterdam.

Digital Illustration Fundamentals
If you can draw with a pencil, you already have the hardest skills needed for digital illustration. Our digital fundamentals course helps traditional artists transition into digital tools without losing what makes their work distinctive.
We cover workflow basics, translating drawing skills into digital media, building confidence with digital composition, linework, and visual development using industry-standard tools. Suitable for freelancers, graphic designers, animators, game artists, and anyone ready to expand into digital illustration.
Mythological Art Workshops & Art History Lectures
Rooted in Celtic, Greek, and Roman mythology, folklore, and symbolism — our workshops and lectures combine creative drawing practice with a deep dive into the narrative imagery that has shaped Western and Irish visual culture.
Celtic Mythology & Symbolism
Explore Irish and Celtic visual traditions — from knotwork and spirals to warrior figures, goddesses, and the imagery of the Tuatha Dé Danann. Draw the myths of Ireland.
Greek & Roman Mythology
Study the gods, heroes, and creatures of ancient Greece and Rome — their visual attributes, iconography, and how classical artists depicted them across centuries.
Art History Lectures
Illustrated lectures tracing how mythology shaped art from ancient friezes to Pre-Raphaelite paintings — building visual literacy and historical context for your own work.
Who Attends Our Mythology Workshops?
These workshops attract an extraordinarily diverse community: cultural tourists exploring Irish heritage, fantasy and game concept artists seeking authentic visual references, writers illustrating their own work, art history enthusiasts, and anyone drawn to the power of narrative imagery. No drawing experience required — just curiosity.
Why Learn at Elysium Canvas?
We're not a large institution. We're a focused studio in the heart of Dublin 1 built around small groups, real feedback, and a community of artists who genuinely support each other's progress.
Small Group Classes
Every class is deliberately small — meaning your instructor knows your work, your challenges, and your goals. Progress happens faster when you're not anonymous.
Personalised Feedback
Receive honest, constructive critique on your actual work — not generic advice. Each session includes time dedicated to reviewing student drawings and discussing improvements.
Studio Atmosphere
A proper working studio on Liffey Street Lower — walls covered in student work, natural light, the smell of graphite and ink. The environment matters for creative focus.
All Taught in English
All instruction is delivered in clear, accessible English — welcoming Dublin locals, expats, exchange students, and international visitors equally.
Creative Community
Share progress, swap references, and celebrate milestones alongside fellow students. Several lasting creative partnerships and friendships have formed right here in this studio.
Structured Progression
Courses are sequenced carefully — you won't repeat content you've mastered or skip foundations you need. Your learning path is mapped and revisited at every stage.
Work & Voices from the Studio
Nothing proves a course works like the people who took it. Here's what students at every level have to say about their experience at Elysium Canvas.
"I hadn't drawn since school and was genuinely nervous to come in. Within six weeks of the foundations course I was producing observational drawings I was genuinely proud of. The small class size made all the difference — I never felt rushed or judged."
"The mythology workshop was unlike anything I expected from an art class in Dublin. We spent an entire session drawing Celtic spiral knotwork while the instructor talked through the symbolic meaning behind each motif. I came as a tourist and left wanting to move here."
"My daughter was applying to NCAD and we were both stressed about the portfolio. The portfolio development course here gave her structure and real confidence. She got in. Worth every cent and more."
"I've been drawing digitally for years but always felt something was missing. The digital illustration fundamentals course finally made me understand why — I had skipped the foundations entirely. This course fixed that, and my client work has improved noticeably."
"The life drawing sessions are the highlight of my week. The instructor creates such a focused, respectful environment — you genuinely forget you're a beginner. My figure drawing has transformed in three months of attendance."
"As a non-native English speaker living in Dublin, I was worried about following technical instruction. It was never a problem — the teaching is clear, patient, and genuinely encouraging. I now keep a sketchbook everywhere I go."
About Elysium Canvas — Art Education in Dublin
Elysium Canvas was founded on a simple conviction: that drawing is a learnable skill, not an innate gift, and that everyone benefits from structured, thoughtful instruction. Located on Liffey Street Lower in Dublin 1 — steps from the Liffey, at the centre of the city's cultural corridor — our studio is purpose-built for focused, creative learning.
We combine rigorous technical drawing instruction with a distinctive focus on mythology, art history, and visual storytelling. This reflects our belief that drawing is not just a technical exercise — it is a way of thinking, seeing, and making meaning. Understanding the visual language of mythology and history gives artists a richer vocabulary and a deeper connection to the work they create.
All instruction is delivered in English, welcoming students from across Dublin, Ireland, and the world. Our courses range from single workshops to extended programmes, always delivered in small groups where every student receives the attention they need to grow.
